Greening Arundel is a passionate alliance of individuals and organizations dedicated to driving environmental change in Arundel. We believe in the power of collective action and community engagement to create a more sustainable, greener town for all.
In 2019, “Love Arundel”, a major community and business consultation, highlighted the need for “a greener, cleaner” town to enhance quality-of-life for residents and to stimulate tourism in support of business success. In its Strategic Plan for 2023/27, Arundel Town Council has set out objectives, which include: to reduce and reverse the causes of climate change locally, as well as to sustain and enhance the green spaces of the town.
A number of community-based organisations have been working towards these goals for some time. In 2023, these organisations came together to form the “Greening Arundel” network, explicitly to build synergy, enhance sustainability and harness collective potential to make Arundel greener. In short, to become a catalyst for community-based change.
The initiative is supported by the Green Team, a group of 30 local volunteers who have rolled up their sleeves to implement a series of projects across the town. Such as transforming the station pathway and the Quayside bed, maintaining the Pollinator Garden and planting herbs in upcycled troughs across town. They are the helping hands, supportive smiles and encouraging voices that help turn every idea into a reailty. We are also supported by Arundel Town Council, the South Downs Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society, GTR, and the Sussex Ornithological Society, as well as by local businesses and organisations. Alongside this we are partnering with the local charities, such as The Aldingbourne Trust.
We are working to increase biodiversity and bio-abundance by planting up more troughs and transforming green spaces, such as the station forecourt. We want to help Arundel become a haven for wildlife through our Bring Back the Birds (B-BOB) initiative, the Hedgehog Club and via a Wildlife Corridor. We are aiming to reduce environmental damage through encouraging positive greening practices. We are finding ways to engage as many locals as possible in greening activities, with designed events, ongoing promotion and dedicated teaching. We are working hard on sustainability in a vareity of ways, one of which is by successfully continuing to propagate on our own group allotment.
But there is much more to do and always room for more people and ideas to help. So if you are interested in finding out more then read on, take a look around and find out more about our ongoing projects.
Sustaining healthy, community connections is vital within Greening Arundel. Getting together once a quarter, these are the members that work very hard to ensure ideas are imagined, projects are supported and key objectives are reached.
Take the first step towards a greener Arundel by joining the Green Team. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly town.
