Becoming Sustainable

Sustainability has been and will continue to be a core principle for Greening Arundel. We have been extremely fortunate in our first year to obtain over £11k in funding, as well as to receive financial and in-kind donations, including over 50 plants from the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival.

We have used these funds and gifts wisely to build towards self-sufficiency. With the support of the Arundel Gardens Association and RHS, we secured two plots at the Priory Road allotment, where we have been able to propagate a large number of perennial and self-seeding plants. Our ability to propagate has been further enhanced through the assembly of a greenhouse, obtained free-of-charge.

Embedding our initiatives within the community also supports their long-term sustainability. Organisational sustainability is strengthened by having 15 members and through the development of a strategy and action plan to guide us. Nevertheless, we are not complacent. We realise that there will be risks and challenges ahead. However, we believe that the benefits of collaboration have been clearly demonstrated in our first year and we hope very much that Greening Arundel will go from strength to strength.

Growing Our Own

Our Allotment

Located on Priory Road allotments, we have been growing and propagating since June 2023. Funding for this plot came from Arundel Garden Association and Royal Horticultural Society.

We began with a big batch of donated seeds and leftover plants that we collected for free from the Hampton Court Show, with local business Fauna Brewing lending us their time and their van to do so. Then with the help from the Gardening enthusiasts from Aldingbourne Trust, the Green Team took what was a unproductive, overgrown plot and tended it into a healthy resource of various plants.

A free greenhouse has also been sourced and assembled by volunteers.

A huge collection of the plants grown on the plot have been transported and planted at the Arundel train station forecourt.

Coffee Ground Collection

The cafe community have come together to tackle the coffee ground waste issue in Arundel.

In 2023 it was noticed that the coffee ground waste from local businesses could be put to better use...at the local allotments. So a collection scheme was set up. Communal bins were put in place at the allotments. Now, every Tuesday morning 6 contributors (Juniper, Lulamaes, The Town Hall, Pallant of Arundel, The Swan, The Steakist and Tarrant Street Espresso) all have their coffee ground waste collected and taken to the allotment site by Green Team volunteers.

Waste reduced for them and free compost addition for the growers.

If you are a local business and would like to join the scheme please get in touch via email.

Aldingbourne Trust

A partnership of people. A wonderful connection with a local charity. We have got to know many individuals at Aldingbourne and they have helped not only support our projects, but have been an integral part of sustaining them. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to; watering Arundel Train Station planted areas, team gardening at the Green Team allotment, designing and building the Bug Hotels that are installed all over the town.

"Providing opportunities for adults with learning disabilities or autism to live meaningful and fulfilled lives and to positively contribute to their communities. Jointly with the people we care about, the Aldingbourne Trust runs several social enterprises as a way of providing job opportunities, as well as unique experiences and products for our supporters and donors." from the Aldingbourne Trust website 2024.

Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital

An alliance for the animals. Another local charity that we work closely with. The experts at Brent Lodge are always on hand on offer their knowledge and advice when we need it, even with their full plates down at the Wildlife Hospital. They have given speeches at a couple of our events, in order to help support the projects and to spread the word about the fantastic work they do locally.

"Our wildlife Hospital admits injured, sick, or orphaned patients direct from the public, from the RSPCA, or from local vets who have pre-assessed patients as needing wildlife care, recuperation and rehabilitation facilities. Our animal care staff and volunteers undertake this important work with care, compassion and commitment to patient welfare with the aim of responsibly releasing patients back to the wild once they are fit and healthy. In addition we answer thousands of phone calls annually from the public to give advice on wildlife welfare." from the Brentlodge Wildlife Hospital website 2024.

Greenwood Plants

Sustainability is one of our core values at Greenwood Plants; we have a responsibility for the health, prosperity and sustainability of our local communities. Helping our local communities is a priority for us, and we are always proud to contribute to these green schemes. We listen to the needs and requests of local schools, charities and community organisations, such as Greening Arundel —supporting their projects as best we can with our plant donations.

"We enjoy watching these planting schemes come to life and the benefits they bring the students, teachers and wider community."
