Meeting up with The Duke of Norfolk
Location: Fauna Brewing & Taproom
Members of Greening Arundel and the Environment Working Group of the Town Council held a very successful meeting with the Duke of Norfolk today hosted at Fauna Brewing & Taproom by Phil Howard. After visiting the train station to see everything that has been achieved there, the Duke was taken on a virtual tour of our Nature Recovery Corridor. During a short presentation, the Duke responded very positively to suggestions for cooperation. It was a really enjoyable and productive morning for us all, as we explored how we can move forward together.

White Storks at Knepp
Location: The Knepp Estate
In August 2024, representatives of Greening Arundel, the Green Team and the Bring Back Our Birds initiative had an opportunity to visit the White Stork colony on the Knepp Estate. They learned from Laura Vaughan-Hirsch about the origins and evolution of the project and witnessed storks on the ground, perched on their nests, and in flight. It was a magical experience enhanced by the appearance of a couple of Turtle Doves.

Cake and Connect
Location: Arundel Lido
An event in collaboration with Age UK. Connecting an elderly audience with a helping hand to create small but mighty, pollinator friendly window boxes that participants could take home with them. Greening Arundel provided the plants and the Green Team stepped in to lend the helping hands. A great time was had by all.

Hampton Court Presentation
Location: Hampton Court Palace Garden
Greening Arundel's Co-Chair was invited to present at the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival about how the Connected Communities: Network Development Grant was used in Arundel. Greening Arundel representatives had a chance to meet RHS project officer, Pak Ling Wan.

An Evening at Peppering Farm
Location: Peppering Farm, near Arundel
In June 2024, members of Greening Arundel and the Green Team joined Arundel Town Council’s Environment Working Group for an evening visit to Peppering Farm hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk. During a two-hour tour of the farm, the group learned about the conservation of endangered ground-nesting birds on the farm and had the opportunity to quiz the Duke on all aspects of his successful twenty-year endeavour to restore the Grey Partridge locally.

Volunteer Appreciation Picnic
Location: Arundel Train Station
This thank you picnic was held for the Green Team in the station forecourt, centered around the new picnic table and planted area. With 20 people in attendance, including the Mayor and Town Clerk, as well as representatives from GTR and the South East Community Rail Partnership. It was a lovely afternoon, where all could reflect on the what has been acheived at the station. The event was catered by Juniper cafe.

Counting Creatures Training
Location: Arundel
Two training sessions were held in a private garden on how to conduct insect monitoring and how to report findings through the UK’s Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS). Attendees signed up to carry out and report Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) Counts.

Bird Spotting and Reporting
Location: Arundel
Paul Stevens led two well-attended training sessions on spotting, identifying and reporting on swift, swallow and house martin sightings. Paul led the groups on a walk around town to look for nests and to spot and identify birds, before explaining how to report sightings on Swift Mapper etc.

Going Wild About Your Garden
Location: Arundel Town Hall
60 people assembled at the Town Hall to listen to a range of speakers talk about different aspect of gardening for wildlife from organic methodology and avoiding the use of pesticides to how to measure impact in terms of bio-diversity. At the heart of the event was a personal example of how to create and sustain a wildlife garden. Participants were encouraged to apply what they had learned in their own gardens and asked to sign up to help monitor and report on pollinator activity – 26 answered that call.

Haven for Hedgehogs
Location: Arundel Museum
A second wildlife initiative aims to help Arundel become a haven for hedgehogs. A panel of experts described the crisis facing hedgehogs across the UK, before focussing on local efforts to protect and nurture them locally. Close to 50 people attended and once again residents signed up to lend a hand - this time through monitoring and reporting numbers, as well as protecting habitat and creating hedgehog highways. As a result, a Hedgehog Club has been formed by Arundel Agenda 21.

Knepp Ranger Talk at Foraged and Found Supper
Location: The Swan Hotel
A Foraged and Found supper organised by Mary Peach and Friends of Priory Pocket Park. After dinner speaker, Tom Forward presented to a group of 45 local residents about the Weald to Waves initiative and rewilding at the Knepp Estate, where he is a ranger.

Launch of Bring Back Our Birds (B-BOB)
Location: Fauna Brewery Taproom
Councillor Carole Beaty spearheaded an initiative to Bring Back Our Birds (B-BOB) that captured the imagination of the town. Over 60 people turned up on a wet and windy Monday evening to hear Sussex Ornithological Society’s Hirundine Champion, Paul Stevens, explain the continuing decline of swifts, swallows and house martins, as well as efforts to reverse that trend locally. That night, 35 local residents and organisations signed up to “host” nest cups and boxes on their properties and that number quickly rose to 60. In addition, the Arundel Community Orchard Group secured funding from the South Downs Trust to install a House Martin Tower.
